Why just 7 minutes is enough

The use of our body is obviously a 24/7 task. Yet most of us ignore it for 23.5/7 - give or take. This is true whether you exercise or not. Many forms of exercise demand that you ignore your body more so you can get through the pain and struggle. The one time you may not ignore your body is when it is yelling at you in discomfort and then we fight harder to try to ignore it, deal with it, wait for it to go away.

The norm for most exercise is 45minutes to an hour which is fine in of itself, nothing bad or wrong about that. Yet how you spend those minutes hugely matters. The question I ask is, if you could get the same results out of 7 minutes that you can out of 30, which would you do?

7 Minutes of attentive care to your body does just that. It develops a connection with your body that overflows into your everyday. Into your 24/7. The seven deliberate minutes of movement and care for your body, turns into periodic noticing and adjusting of your body throughout the day. You begin to notice your body for 1 or 2 or 5 hours of each day. Not consecutively but in brief moments scattered through the day, because to stay hyperfocused on your body for hours on end is also not ideal. But to notice it 2x every hour, or 10 times an hour, that is a natural way to keep in positive relation with your body and its connection with gravity and the earth.

The other benefit of 7 minutes is there is no excuse not to do it. Everyone can take 7 minutes. And if you can’t take 7, take 4. Seven is a number I chose because you can do two rounds of sun salutation in that time frame. One round is fantastic also. You can do 7 minutes 3x a day. Or 4 minutes twice a day. You can move in small increments when your mind is whirling, when work is making your brain hurt, when life decisions have you spinning.

At our Bend N Move West Seattle location, we train you in attentive movement, in care for your body, and teach you tools to balance it and make it more efficient. We offer these lessons in 5/20/30/40/50 minute sessions. You learn movements that are suited for your bodies needs that you can do at home for 5 minutes a day, 15 minutes, 7 minutes.

If you do not have time for exercise, maybe its just that you don’t have time for what you think exercise is supposed to be.
